A Decade of Impact (2016–2026)

The story of the Grassroots Researchers Association (GRA) is one of resilience, data-driven action, and an unwavering commitment to community. Our journey began informally in 2009 in Maiduguri, Borno State, as a urgent, localized response to the rising insurgency in northeastern Nigeria. Recognizing a critical gap in firsthand data, a flexible collective of independent researchers from various professions across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones came together. They united to monitor and document perennial intra-communal conflicts and religious disputes, creating an empirical, evidence-driven resource to help the government, scholars, and development partners make informed decisions. Seeking a permanent, structured vehicle to scale this vital work, GRA was formally registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission on October 5, 2016. Now, as we reach October 5, 2026, we proudly celebrate our 10th Anniversary. While we have grown exponentially in organizational size, geographical reach, and technical scope over the past decade, this foundational history remains the bedrock where GRA still derives its inspiration, strength, and core objectives today.

Celebrating Ten (10) Years of Excellence

Marking a historic decade of service, the Grassroots Researchers Association (GRA) stands today as a premier, non-profit, and non-political rights-based organization recognized as Nigeria’s leading local content hub. Since our landmark formalization on October 5, 2016, GRA has spent the last 10 years facilitating evidence-based grassroots initiatives, driving community-led analysis, and spearheading action planning to ensure inclusive, equitable access to quality services for vulnerable populations, including women, children, and persons with special needs. Over a decade of operating in complex emergency and early reconstruction environments, we have built a renowned reputation for technical Gender-Based Violence (GBV) case management. Our lifesaving interventions span critical areas like Psychological First Aid (PFA), Protection of Victims of Sexual Violence or Intimidation (PSVI), Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), and advanced data tracking through the GBV Information Management System (GBVIMS). Today, our comprehensive portfolio bridges four vital thematic pillars: Climate Change; Conflict, Security, and Justice; Socioeconomic Development; and Governance. As we look forward to the next decade, GRA enters its eleventh year stronger, more agile, and deeply dedicated to promoting development, justice, and victim support across Nigeria’s grassroots communities.
